Formatting Your Mind Part 3
Solo scriptura, or the Bible only, was the battle cry of the reformers during the era of the Protestant Reformation. What I am about to say, please do not get me wrong, I love the Bible. After all the Bible, what we have of it, is the written Word of God, or the truth. But the Bible itself also says that "the Spirit" is truth. If the written "Word" is truth and "the Spirit" is also truth they must also be in alignment as both are the truth, and also must we be in alignment with both.
So what is the point here? Jesus said, "It is imperative that I go away, because I will send the Holy Spirit, or the "Spirit of truth."
Did these men not have honest and truthful hearts? Why did they need a Spirit of truth? Jesus said of Nathaniel, here is an Israelite in whom there is no guile. Jesus recognized a man who was truthful. He had no guile.
For the most part most people think of truth in a moralistic sense. In other words to lie is not the truth. Nathaniel was not a liar. He was perceived by Jesus as truthful. So again why the need for the Holy Spirit or the spirit of truth, and how does this pertain to our formatting of the mind.
Look at this amazing scripture.
"He stretched out the earth above the waters." Psalms 136:6 How are we to understand this scripture? This is where the Holy Spirit comes in. You can have a truthful heart like Nathaniel and not be able to see with wisdom and revelation, the incredible meaning or truth to this scripture, because it takes the Holy Spirit of truth to reveal it. A moralistic understanding of truth is not a spiritual view of the truth. Hence, Jesus said unless I go, I cannot send the Holy Spirit.
Remember that the first century church did not have the written word of the New Testament they relied on the Spirit for the Spirit is truth. If we lean to the written word alone we may never learn to trust the leading of the Spirit. Yet the Bible says explicitly that the sons of God are those that are led by the Spirit.
"For as many as are led of the Spirit these are the sons of God." Romans 8: 14
Are we unbalanced in our understanding that we have never clearly thought through what it is to walk in the Spirit? What does this mean to you and me, and how to achieve this experience? We need to carefully think through, identify, and understand what it is to walk in the Spirit. Is it simply a kind of an ethical moral-ism where we buck up to legal Biblical admonitions and leave the supernatural leadings of the Spirit behind?
The mental gymnastics of modern Christianity is perhaps the reason why the Church is losing so many people today. Where are all those people going and why? It is obviously because something about their approach to God is not satisfying. People are looking for something, but they cannot find it.
May I suggest it is the walk in the Spirit. The Kingdom is not a mental game nor of doctrines or dogmas, or of a list of how too's. It is a walk in the Spirit.
Let us endeavor in the reformatting of the mind to not think that we are talking about a re-mentalizing or a new academia, but rather a call to a walk in the Spirit. Let us find what this means, and how to achieve it's reality.
There are far to many teachers today and yet Jesus said,
However, when he the Spirit of Truth is come He will guide you into all truth; for he will not speak of His own authority, but whatever He hears he will speak; and He will tell you things to come. Jn 16:12-14
Endeavor therefore to be taught of the Holy Spirit, and be highly discerning of the teachings and doctrines of men.
The first step in the walk of the Spirit is to be "Baptized into the Holy Spirit." This is not the same thing as water baptism. There are untold millions of people today that believe in Christ even those who have been converted and unbelievably, many teachers of the New Testament who have yet to be Baptised in the Holy Spirit.
Seek God your Father who through Jesus proclaimed the possibility and potential to be baptised into the Holy Spirit.
He will send you the Spirit of truth.
More to come on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
